US Open National Playoffs- Day 1 Recap

US Open National Playoffs – Men’s and Women’s Championships
Day 1 Results
New Haven, Conn.

On the first day of play at the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s and
Women’s Championships in New Haven, Conn., tennis veterans moved
through to the next round, with one major upset scored by an
up-and-comer.

All of the men’s seeds advanced to the second round of the US Open
National Playoffs, but on the women’s side, No. 1 seed Marie-Eve
Pelletier, of Canada, was upset by New Jersey teenager Robin Anderson.

Anderson, 18, defeated 29-year-old Pelletier, 6-3, 7-5, in a big win
for her young career. Anderson is currently ranked No. 735 and won her
first professional title this summer at the $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit
event in Landisville, Pa. She reached the quarterfinals of the US Open
juniors last year and will be headed to UCLA in the fall. Canadian Fed
Cupper Pelletier finished in the Top 300 in singles each year from
2000 to 2008 and has finished in the doubles Top 100 each of the last
three years. She has competed in all four Grand Slam events in
doubles, reaching the second round at the US Open in 2009, and owns
six USTA Pro Circuit titles (five in doubles).

Tomorrow, Anderson is also scheduled to play in qualifying at the New
Haven Open at Yale, the final Olympus US Open Series women’s event of
the summer.

Other notable wins today include 2010 US Open National Playoffs men’s
champion and No. 1 seed Blake Strode, of St. Louis, who defeated Bojan
Temunovic, of Scottsdale, Ariz., 6-0, 6-1. Strode is coming off his
third USTA Pro Circuit singles title after winning at the $10,000 USTA
Pro Circuit Futures in Edwardsville, Ill., last week. He formerly
played at the University of Arkansas and deferred Harvard Law School
to play tennis.

No. 2 seed David Martin, of Key Biscayne, Fla., who has competed in
the US Open men’s doubles every year since 2007, defeated Texan Juan
Moreiras, 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 seed Chris Wettengel, of Las Vegas, and No.
4 seed and former Elon standout Damon Gooch, of Bethesda, Md., also
advanced.

35-year-old Mashona Washington played three close sets against
Indonesian Fed Cupper Romana Tedjakusuma, also 35, with Washington
winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Washington has played in the US Open main draw
six times and owns a career victory over Maria Sharapova (in 2004).
Washington reached the third round in Wimbledon in 2005 and peaked at
No. 50 in the world in 2004. No. 2 seed and former UCLA standout
Yasmin Schnack, of Elk Grove, Calif., No. 3 seed Macall Harkins, of
Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and No. 4 seed and 2008 NCAA singles
champion Amanda McDowell, of Atlanta, all advanced.

Quarterfinal matches will take place tomorrow, starting at 10:00 a.m.
The men’s and women’s winners this week will receive a wild card into
the 2011 US Open Qualifying Tournament, held from August 23-26, at the
USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
